The effect of calcium on bone strength seems obvious, as bones are composed of a crystalline matrix of calcium and other material. Less obvious, but well known in the scientific literature, is the effect of dietary calcium on blood pressure. Blood pressure is controlled in part by the relative constriction or dilatation of the major and minor arteries, which open close through the action of smooth muscle fibers in the artery wall.
