Facts About Implant Dentistry

Implant DentistryImplant dentistry is a vast improvement over conventional dentistry, which is a great alternatives for those who are fed up with wearing dentures and artificial-looking teeth, or worried about what will happen if and when the denture prostheses or artificial dentures were suddenly fall out. In this procedure, posts are placed inside the oral bone and left to integrate in place over a period of a month. The implant is then placed over embedded post. It is visible inside the mouth, and it appears completely normal and natural.

The Mayan civilization has been known to have used the earliest known examples of endosseous implants (implants embedded into bone), proven by the finding of a fragment of mandible of Mayan origin by archaeologists in 1931 in Honduras, which is dating from 600 AD. The mandible was belong to a woman in her twenties, with three tooth-shaped pieces of shell placed into the sockets of three missing lower incisor teeth.

Now, a typical implant consists of a titanium screw, made from commercially pure titanium upon the amount of carbon and iron contained. The titanium is available from first to fifth grade. However, some current researches have focused on the using of ceramic materials such as zirconia. It is the dioxide of zirconium, a metal close to titanium in the periodic table. Zirconia has the advantage of being more cosmetically aesthetic because of its bright tooth-like colour.

Many people think that fixed replacement is better, but replacing dentures with fixed crowns and bridges can be really expensive and labor intensive. Implant dentistry is chosen because some patients do not want to cut into two or more teeth just to replace a single tooth. But not every patient can get implants done. Because this procedure is sensitive, patient compliance in the form of dental hygiene is very important. The underlying bony support is also quite critical in selecting and using implants. If the bone support is not enough, a bone graft is required that will be able to hold the implant in place.

The implant must be functional and aesthetically pleasing at the same time. Improperly placed implants can cause the bone to be under too much pressure, causing it to dissolve or resorb. This will eventually push the implant out again. Pain and bleeding can be a complication of the procedure. But there are chances that patients with underlying medical causes—such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and bruxism—can cause the procedure to fail. Accurate pre-operative care and diagnosis can reduce these risks and complications completely.
